Many Manifestations of Fear

Fear is a strong very unpleasant emotion, everybody will experience fear one day, its just a natural primal thing, it goes hand in hand with anger and can be understood as groundless or cannot be understood, therefore perform as a paralysing anxiety.

Some people fear rain, others fear being alone, some are struck by fear on seeing a spider crawling up the wall, or they fear manically barking dogs. What my biggest fear is? I fear for instance while travelling, the soullessness of a nondescript hotelroom with dirty bathroom. No that’s not my biggest fear, I fear going astray with my mind, losing it, wandering from place to place, spooking myself.

If I try to figure out the today world we are living in, I truly fear the time to come, not afraid of the total destruction of the planet, but afraid the human kind, simultaneously lovely and cruel, can not inhabit this planet anymore.

There’s nothing luxurious about fear, fear is a mean thing, a train needs wheels to turn, fear has wings that can swing along on any kind of wind, it is shadowy as an abstract entity, and it is very aggressive, brutal, merciless, it can push the mind into darkest places where rats are biting cats to death.

I think about fear that makes our hearts pound, cold shivers down the spine, all the pain it can cause and not to forget the fear of dying, the fatal entrapment is not to be able to accept fate without fear. Screaming in despair. Not cool when facing the end of it all.

I am afraid of fear and its dreadful ways, useless to blockt it, better embrace it, fear has a transformative nature, sometimes it can be removed in the complex struggles of the human souls, and then in happy moments you realise: gone is the fear. Really, sometimes it does happen, being freed from fear, as under the influence of a divine power, but often it does not happen at all and fear will remain caged within a lifetime.

What about tragic people, so many of them around the globe, who had to escape their country because they couldn’t stand living on constant fear of attack. Living day to day with danger, evil, pain, terror, the constant threat of the horrors of war?

I repeat I fear the time to come. In meantime I still like making love.

Fabulous piece of poetry reflecting the horrors of war in an original shift of perspective, depiction in plain everyday reality, employing a matter-of-fact style. Its an easy read, yet profound.

Our fear

does not wear a night shirt
does not have owl’s eyes
does not lift a casket lid
does not extinguish a candle

does not have a dead man’s face either

our fear
does not rise on the wings of the tempest
does not sit on a church tower
it is down-to-earth

it has the shape
of a bundle made in haste
with warm clothing
provisions
and arms

our fear
does not have the face of a dead man
the dead are gentle to us
we carry them on our shoulders
sleep under the same blanket

close their eyes
adjust their lips
pick a dry spot
and bury them

not too deep
not too shallow

Text Blurb Back-cover, 1968.

‘No country has suffered more of the brutalities of Communism and Fascism than Poland. Yet Zbigniew Herbert, the most classical of its poets, is neither nationalist nor Catholic. He speaks for no party. Avant-garde in manner, but controlled, precise, and honest in thoughts, he stands aside from the chaos all round him, ironically bent on survival. He is the voice of sanity.’
