The obsession with the bomb The Big One
ONLINE DIARY bad news Russian mobilisation in action to become ready for war engagement of Russian military forces in Ukraine
Once again the Russian President Putin builds up his image as merciless dictator and threatens to use nuclear weapons. I am not the only one in the world who wonders: how can a person of any intelligence and not deranged be so incredible fucking stupid? Sign of disturbed mental health? When I think about his primitive aggression I end up with this question: is this furious madman born in hell, in the cradle of evil? Did he ever enjoyed a goodnight kiss of peace? Another question: What explains his hate towards the Western world? Russia, what did we do wrong to deserve your contempt? This is a cold war question that was actual at the time when we were being despised or scorned by the Soviet-Union. Now this question is again urgent. History repeating itself, are we back in the Cold War? In the dim shadow of the Iron Curtain? Yes, more or less, this time with an unique dramatic dimension: the nuclear bomb.
Tell me, all these questions (made possible by the most precious privilege of mankind: an analytical mind) who has the answers? The Kremlin-critics in Moscow are silenced by the cruel punishment of the Putin-regime. Fear dominates Russian (by definition throughout corrupted) society. Especially remarkable in this regard is the behaviour of the reasonable intellectuals. Their painful silence demonstrates how strong the instinct to survive is, stronger than the desire for freedom of speech. Everybody is afraid. As if being prisoned and psychologically tormented they are forced to await the dramatic events to come, such as the mobilisation Putin declared recently.
And now on top of all misery there’s the threat of a bomb, the Big One, like we have seen happen in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Which city first Mister Putin, Kyiv, New York, London, Brussel? Or Amsterdam? Why not destroy the whole world. For who are you going to save the last dance? More important, who is going to stop you anyway? And how? All the killing. First time in history that this war on European continent is possible because of the threat of the bomb.
The obsession with the bomb has actually come to life in my memory with the song Political Science by Randy Newman. He sings the song with ironical pleasure, its purely satirical therefore cannot be conceived in any patriotic spirit. I like the lyrics. What’s it about? The character who is speaking in this song is overly patriotic or nationalistic, unselfishly devoted to the pragmatic and ideological service of his country.
I agree with this following text found on Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia: ‘ … the song is a satire of a particular part of American culture and history, namely its foreign policies at the time. The unnamed narrator describes the state of the world, and suggests, “Lets drop the big one and see what happens.”
PS
The idea of mighty America bombing the world, that’s quite a grotesque concept. Sickening. The biggest nightmare imaginable is America being the one and only country in control on the planet. it’s even more depressing than living in the regime of Russia with Putin. America, this low IQ-country has gone crazy. Worldwide there’s a growing and deeply felt aversion to all what represents America, aversion to everything excessive or monstrous that happens there since Trump.
Text Randy Newman, 1969, Album Sail away, 1972.
Political Science
No one likes us
I don’t know why
We may not be perfect
But heaven knows we try
But all around
Even our old friends put us down
Let’s drop the big one
And see what happens
We give them money
But are they grateful
No, they’re spiteful
And they’re hateful
They don’t respect us
So let’s surprise them
We’ll drop the big one
And pulverize them
Asia’s crowded
And Europe’s too old
Africa’s far too hot
And Canada’s too cold
And South America stole our name
Let’s drop the big one
There’ll be no one left to blame us
We’ll save Australia
Don’t want to hurt no kangaroo
We’ll build an all American amusement park there
They’ve got surfing too
Boom goes London
And boom Paree
More room for you
And more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it’ll be
We’ll set everybody free
You’ll have Japanese kimonos, baby
There’ll be Italian shoes for me
They all hate us anyhow
So let’s drop the big one now
Let’s drop the big one now.
